The upgraded Gothic experience just dropped last Friday on June 5, does it live up to it's name from 25 years ago? Absolutely, it's so faithful that the remake is just as polarizing to the audience in a manner similar to the original release.
2026-fied Graphic and Gameplay is the most notable change in Gothic Remake, with more visual details not just on NPC and creatures but on the world as well with newly designed environmental storytelling across the world, the Remake also finally gave us smoother gameplay, from exploration and most importantly combat, actions are more seamless and input more reactive than the infamous combat in original that gave rise to the term 'eurojank'.

However there is still a considerable stiffness in player's action that feels less smooth than other AAA title, granted it's not Monster Hunter Wilds level smooth but it's still more manageable than the original that combat is way more fluid and enjoyable.
Hilariously, it just sparks a Déjà vu hearing how the 2026 Remake somehow still gets blasted for having less polished combat in similar manner to the universal complaints player had with the original Gothic, two era; same affection and annoyance.
Vertical exploration is now more defined with swimming and climbing mechanic to traverse the world, Wildlife and NPC are more interactive with one another, with simulated economy of supply and demand.

Expanded Lore & Quest that adds more content especially to the late game, many creatures who are previously acted as mere obstacle now has fleshed out story tied to them, most notably the Orcs are now a full fledged factions instead of just an enemy, naturally they also updated the Script and VC to be more modern
Living, Breathing World with wildlife and NPC interacting with each other, and simulated economy
Seamless Open World without additional loading, this also allows NPC and wildlife to interact more with each other.
And many more Quality of Lives such as sprinting, multiple target hitbox, sneak available from start, and most spells can be cast while moving.
It seems that playerbase is just as much divided with the remake compared to the original when it first came out with love/hate being the norm... loving the game as a whole but cussing the other portion that feels too unpolished, but personally Gothic Remake feels to be on the same level with Oblivion and Snake Eater Remake in terms of quality and impact on the fanbase, and based on their current feedback loop with players, Alkimia Interactive is currently working on updates for additional feature, fixes, and balancing, so we can expect these issue to be addressed in the future.
Piranha Bytes would be proud, or rather they are because several dev member are actually the original devs of the original Gothic.
