The Witcher 3 Officially Returns With a New Expansion More Than a Decade Later

After months of rumors, leaks, and community speculation, CD Projekt Red has now officially confirmed a brand-new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The expansion is titled Songs of the Past, and it marks the third major story expansion for the legendary RPG, nearly eleven years after the original game launched in May 2015.

The announcement happened on May 27, 2026, after an apparent RED Launcher leak forced CD Projekt Red to reveal the project earlier than planned. According to the official confirmation, the expansion is being co-developed with Fool’s Theory, the studio currently involved with the remake of the original Witcher game. Geralt of Rivia is also officially confirmed to return as the protagonist.

For years, Blood and Wine was treated as the perfect ending. Released on May 31, 2016, the expansion was widely considered Geralt’s farewell, a rare RPG conclusion that actually felt complete. Most fans assumed CD Projekt Red would never revisit The Witcher 3 outside of visual updates or anniversary celebrations.

Instead, the studio just revived one of the most beloved RPGs ever made.

What makes this announcement especially interesting is the timing. CD Projekt Red is already deep into development on The Witcher IV, while the remake of the first Witcher is also underway. Yet somehow, the company still decided to return to The Witcher 3 itself rather than simply moving forward.

Even in 2026, The Witcher 3 still dominates conversations around open-world RPG design. Players continue replaying it, modding it, and comparing nearly every fantasy RPG against it. Very few games remain culturally relevant for over a decade without relying on multiplayer or live-service systems.

The new expansion, Songs of the Past, is currently scheduled for release in 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. CD Projekt has not revealed story details yet, but more information is expected during upcoming REDstreams later this year.

The most exciting part is not even the DLC itself, it’s the atmosphere around it.

There’s something unusual about seeing an older single-player RPG get a full-scale expansion this late into its lifespan. Most publishers would rather remaster the game again or shift entirely toward sequels. But CD Projekt seems to understand that The Witcher 3 is bigger than a normal catalog title at this point. It has become one of those rare games people emotionally attach themselves to.

At the same time, not everyone is fully convinced this is the right move.

Some fans worry that revisiting Geralt again could weaken the emotional impact of Blood and Wine’s ending. Part of what made that expansion special was the sense of closure. Bringing Geralt back risks turning a carefully finished story into something that never truly ends. Others also question whether this project might distract resources away from The Witcher IV.

Still, if there’s any RPG capable of pulling this off, it’s probably The Witcher 3.

Because at this point, the game is no longer just remembered for nostalgia. It’s remembered because many players still genuinely believe few RPGs have surpassed it since 2015. And now, against all expectations, Geralt’s story is continuing again.
